Ms. Merla served as a Hon’ble Technical Member of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), the country’s bankruptcy appellate tribunal for a term of 5 years.
Ms. Shreesha Merla is an MBA from Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai with specialization in Marketing and Finance. She is also a Law graduate from Osmania University, Hyderabad and recipient of the Nizam’s Gold Medal for having topped the University in Economics in 1985.
She started her career as a Management Trainee in Shriram Refrigeration Industries and thereafter was instrumental in setting up M/s Vidhata Plastics India Pvt. Ltd., a first generation woman entrepreneurial unit. She worked in this greenfield project for ten years and was responsible for the day to day functioning and financial management of the Company.
She was involved in integrating the financial and human resources to achieve the strategic goals of the Company. She joined the District Consumer Forum, Hyderabad on March 15th , 2000 and was appointed as Non-Judicial Member, Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on November 3rd , 2003. She is credited with having disposed of the highest number of Consumer cases in the combined State of Andhra Pradesh. She was the In-charge President of the State Commission for a period of 1 year 7 months in all, during which time she organized several circuit benches in the State of Andhra Pradesh, conducted Lok Adalats, training programs for the Members and addressed All India Conferences on Consumer Protection Act, 1986 with specific reference to issues concerning Home Buyers, Insurance, Medical Negligence etc. She was reappointed for another term of 5 years in November 2008.
On January 22nd , 2015, she joined the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the Apex Consumer Forum of the Country and adjudicated thousands of Consumer cases including Class Actions. She enunciated new legal Principles particularly with respect to ‘duty of care’ by Specialist Doctors, the rights of home buyers against the developers, the liability of Insurance Companies in cases of theft, accidents, fires, floods, mediclaim etc. She has 19 years of adjudicating experience of deciding Consumer Cases relating to Manufacturing, Finance, Banking, Trading, Insurance, Real Estate etc. During her tenure as a Non-Judicial Member, she has the distinction of having disposed of more than 10 thousand cases. She joined as Technical Member, NCLAT on January 22nd, 2020. Her five year term ended earlier in 2024.
