Sumant Batra is an insolvency lawyer of global eminence with three decades of experience in the areas of insolvency, bankruptcy and related laws. His work and contributions range from policy making to drafting of legislation and regulations, designing best practises to their disseminating, advising and representing clients to assisting the courts in development of jurisprudence, sharing knowledge through writing and speaking at conferences to curating and delivering capacity building programmes for stakeholders.
Team Lead, Research Associate
Vaidehi Gulati is a Research Associate at the Insolvency Law Academy. She joined on September 1, 2022, as the first full time member of ILA Core Team. She is a member Secretary of the Working Groups constituted by ILA – to propose a professional self-regulatory framework for the committee of creditors and to propose best practices for insolvency professional entities. She is also Ex-Officio convener and secretary of the Emerging Scholars Group. She judged the preliminary round of the 6th Arun Jaitley International Insolvency and Bankruptcy Moot Competition. She regularly assists the President, ILA in court cases, preparing reports, writing articles and researching.
Prior to joining ILA, Vaidehi worked for three years as Law Research Associate at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and was attached to the President, NCLT and various other Members (Judicial & Technical), from 2019 to 2022. During her tenure at NCLT she has assisted in drafting various landmark Orders passed under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 and the Companies Act 2013.
Vaidehi is a qualified lawyer and has been working for over 5 years in the areas of insolvency, corporate, & commercial law, consumer law and indirect tax. She has argued cases before High Courts, Tribunals and other Forums. An L.L.M. with first class from Department of Law, Savitribai Phule Pune University, she is also a Gold medallist in the Diploma in Mergers and Acquisitions. Vaidehi is proficient in reading, writing and speaking English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.
Assistant Research Associate
Mehreen, the Assistant Research Associate at the Insolvency Law Academy (ILA), has been an integral part of the ILA Core Team since her appointment in July 2022. Her journey as the first member of the ILA Core Team began during her tenure as a law student at OP Jindal Law School where she served as an Assistant to the President, contributing to the institution’s foundational development.
In her current role, Mehreen’s responsibilities encompass academic writing and research, where she provides steadfast support to the President. Beyond her ILA duties, Mehreen is an advocate registered under the Bar Council of India, practising in civil and commercial laws, insolvency and bankruptcy laws, white-collar crimes, and consumer laws.
Research Associate
A law graduate from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi and a masters in corporate and business laws from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Mayank began his career as a Law Research Associate at the National Company Law Tribunal, Delhi. During his stint in the Hon’ble Supreme Court he worked with the then Secretary General’s office, where he was commended by the Hon’ble Chief justice for his contribution in the development of E-SCR project. He also worked with HMJ Rajesh Bindal, where he assisted the court in research and drafting of judgements. Following his passion for academics, law and research Mayank has now joined ILA for the development of the Insolvency Regime in India
Research Associate
Shiv Malang is a law graduate from Savitribai Phule Pune University. He started his career at Repos Energy, where he gained experience in start advisory work. Currently, he is pursuing the Post Graduate Insolvency Programme (PGIP) at the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs. This programme is the first-of-its-kind, industry-endorsed programme for aspiring Insolvency Professionals (IPs), focusing on Insolvency, Restructuring, Arbitration, Mediation, Negotiation, Financial Modelling and Valuation.
Shiv has assisted energy startups in their early stages of business development. Shiv is enthusiastic about research in insolvency and is a significant contributor to the broader insolvency research sector. His ultimate goal is to integrate his legal background with financial concepts, particularly in insolvency and restructuring research. He is dedicated to promoting innovation and business growth, which makes him a valuable asset to the field.
Team Assistant
Manoj Kumar completed his Bachelor of Computer Application from Kalinga University of Chattisgarh in the Year 2017. Prior to joining ILA, he worked in a Private Company as MIS Executive.
