onceived as an innovative initiative, the ILA Short Story Contest was envisioned as a platform to explore creative expression within the nuanced framework of insolvency law in India. Over the years, it has evolved into a distinguished forum, drawing a diverse and talented cohort of writers, alongside an ever-growing community of discerning readers. Through its thought-provoking themes, evocative narratives, and the stewardship of an esteemed jury, the contest has come to occupy a unique and respected position at the confluence of law and literature.

Now in its 5th edition, the contest promises to be its most compelling and enriching yet continuing to celebrate imagination, intellectual engagement, and the profound interplay between legal thought and storytelling.

The Patrick Ang ILA International Short Story Contest on Insolvency & Bankruptcy Laws promises to be the most compelling and enriching yet, while continuing to celebrate imagination, intellectual engagement, and the profound interplay between legal thought and storytelling.

We welcome submissions on any of the following themes: 

1.⁠ ⁠Reimagining the role of courts, tribunals and judges in the insolvency process 2.  Insolvency of natural persons, small enterprises, and consumer debt default 

3.  Group insolvency of multinational corporations

4.⁠ ⁠Turnaround as focus of hybrid restructuring mechanisms 

5.⁠ ⁠Approach to insolvency in enterprises opera ng complex sectors of economy

A Jury comprising eminent persons from around the world will select the winner for the award and the collection of stories.

Literature serves as a potent medium for sensitising individuals and fostering awareness. In particular, narrative forms such as stories exert a significant impact, often leaving a deep and enduring impression on readers. These narratives frequently encapsulate valuable insights derived from real-time experiences, empirical observations, or prevailing societal perceptions related to insolvency. Owing to their narrative structure and emotional resonance, such stories tend to exhibit greater longevity and enhanced recall value.

While promoting the much-needed conversation on corporate insolvencyand climate change and helping to raise awareness about the benefits of insolvency law. The short story contest will also serve as a means to gather resource material for ESG to study the notion of stigma and other negative perceptions that often act as impediments to the effective use of insolvency law.

Outcomes

 

  • A fine Collection of Short Stories selected by ESG, in consultation with the Jury will be published in the form of an e-book or hard publication, as may be determined by the ILA. The book may be co-sponsored by a third party. Selected authors will have copyright on the stories together with ILA, but not receive any royalties.

  • All submissions received shall be utilised for the purposes of research by ILA. Consent of participants will be obtained at the time of submission of entries.
