Professor Shubhashis Gangopadhyay is an eminent economist. He is Founder and Director at India Development Foundation; Dean, School of Liberal Studies, UPES, Dehradun; Visiting Professor at University of Gothenberg, Sweden, and University of Groningen, Netherlands; Vice Chairman and Co-Founder of the Centre for Digital Futures.

Professor Gangopadhyay has been an Advisor to Finance Minister in the rank of Secretary, Government of India, and was the founding Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shiv Nadar University. He has been an Advisor to the Competition Commission of India, held several high-profile public policy advisory roles and has been a consultant for policies to various ministries including Finance, Planning, Industry and Rural Development. Most recently, he was a member of the Government of India’s High-Powered Committee on Defence Land, 2017-18.

He has led major research projects, including that on patent laws (sponsored by Qualcomm), skilling women (sponsored by Ikea Foundation), small businesses and digital preparedness (sponsored by Facebook).

He has also been a Member of. Asia Chief Economist’s Advisory Council, World Bank; CAF Board of Advisors, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad; Bankruptcy Task Force, IPD, Columbia University; International Advisory Board, LEFIC, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; Advisory Committee, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India; Dean of the Indian School of Public Policy.

He has previously been a Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute; a Visiting Professor at Rutgers University, USA and a Visiting Associate Professor at University of Southern California, USA.

Prof Gangopadhyay is a graduate in Economics from Presidency College, Kolkata, and received his Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University, USA in 1983. In 2006, he was awarded a doctorate (honoris causa) by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
